Interview with Nectarphonic

Conducted by Indie Artists Alliance, a resource center and knowledge bank for Independent Musicians and Video Producers:
http://www.indieartistsalliance.com

What is your performance name?
Nectarphonic

What is your real name?
Kerry Bennett

How long have you been making music?
Most of my life -- I took a break after college when I thought I had to be serious and responsible. I'm still responsible (mostly), but I came back to music and have been so happy.

How did you get started?
Singing is the first thing I can remember being good at, at a very young age. Songwriting is a recent development and for me it's been like jumping into the deep end of the swimming pool -- so kids, it's never too late!

Who are the other members of your band?
Lorenzo Scott - drums (see guest appearance, below!), Ken Lee -- guitar/keys, Chris Echols -- bass

What genre of music do you usually perform?
alternative rock

Not using typical genre classifications, how would you describe your material in as few words as possible
We are atmospheric and vibey -- sometimes dreamy, sometimes dark and moody, always groove-oriented.

Who is your inspiration?
I'm inspired by any-genred musicians who don't need any bells and whistles to still let you feel emotion down to the bone -- Emmylou Harris, Sia, Eva Cassidy, Willie Nelson, Aretha. Sam Cooke. Nina Simone! The list goes on.

What was the name of the last song that you wrote?
At a basic level, it's about feeling the very real urgency and weight of the world on your shoulders and not always feeling up to the task. I have a specific interpretation for myself, but I like to think that everyone can relate to that basic feeling.

Who are some of the musicians that have a sound like yours?
Portishead, Massive Attack, Cocteau Twins, Pink Floyd. They're constantly being told that they sound like us

What was the name of the last CD that you produced?
Nectarphonic's most recent CD is called Satellite.

Who or what was instrumental in helping you make it a success?
Lorenzo Scott and Ken Lee co-produced Satellite, with Ken also acting as the recording engineer. They brought the beautiful sound to life. The sound of the CD can also be credited to Trevor Sadler. He's an amazing mastering engineer and he mastered the CD. The artwork is also steller. The art director and graphic artist/designer for this CD is Kulov. Songs have sold well on iTunes as well as CDbaby.com. Music from Satellite has been licensed to MTV for various shows. The Travel Channel, VH-1 & Bravo networks have also licensed songs from Satellite. The CD is a success because of a team effort. Nothing is done in a vacuum. We're very lucky and grateful to everyone.

When was that?
It was released in December 2006 -- 2007 has been the year when all the success for Satellite has happened.

Do you have any concerts or tours coming up? (when and where?)
We're performing around LA over the coming months, including: 11/16 at The Joint, 11/20 at Molly Malone's, and 12/12 at McMurphy's in Pasadena. We've played up and down California and are looking to make 2008 the year that we take our music all over.

Do you have a new CD coming up? Anything that you are currently working on?
We recently re-configured our lineup, and since then the musical ideas have really been flowing! We have about four new songs that we love, and once we get a few more we're going to get in the studio to record -- probably December or January.

Where can people learn more about you? What's your website?
