Interview with Diane Kay

Indie Artists Alliance interviews Diane Kay

What is your performance name?
Diane Kay What is your real name?
Diane Kay Coons

How long have you been making music?
I’ve been playing since I was 13 years old

How did you get started?
I grew up in a very musical home. My father was an excellent pianist and his brothers were also musicians.  I always loved to sing and would put on concerts for my family starting at the age of 5. My oldest brother gave me his Gibson acoustic guitar when I was 12. I bought a Mel Bay book and taught myself chords. I had already learned to read music by playing clarinet in the middle school concert band. So, I first wrote little love songs to whatever boy I liked (I was 12 okay?) Then I wrote my first Christian song at the age of 13. I continued my school band all through high school and was also in Chorus and a student conductor. The serious writing took off in 1984 after my son was born and after listening to Amy's Grants "Age to Age" album!

Who are the other members of your band?
Right now I have Carol Abel on the keyboards & harmony, Harry Abel on Guitar, Jeff Coons on percussion, myself on acoustic guitar and vocals and other musicians are in and out (it is hard to keep a drummer). I am currently seeking experienced musicians to join the band to reflect the music on my CD that was Produced by Creative Soul Records in Nashville. The musicians on my CD are studio musicians (and awesome at that!)who have played for artists such as Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Rich Mullins, Johnny Cash, to name a few.

What genre of music do you usually perform?I play Christian Contemporary/Rock/Ballads, it is a mixture of classic 70's Rock style, middle of the road contemporary. I like to sing piano ballads as well as ROCK-OUT! There is something for everyone!

Who is your inspiration?
Needless to say, the Holy Spirit! Jesus, my Savior!

What was the name of the last song that you wrote?
"No Compromise"

Who or what inspired you to write that song?
My kids who are now adults and struggling!

Who are some of the musicians that have a sound like yours?
Hmm, well-as far as the music (and not lyrics) Santana, Pat Benatar, Heart, Linda Ronstadt, Ginny Owens, Elvis? Intro on one song makes me think of AC/DC

What was the name of the last CD that you produced?
"Help Me Decide"-but it was produced by Creative Soul records in Nashville

Who or what was instrumental in helping you make it a success?
God, my husband Jeff and Eric Copeland (Creative Soul)-and the success is just getting started

When was that?
From 2006-2007

Do you have any concerts or tours coming up?
T
here are some local festivals in the works in the state of Georgia as well as Texas and Minnesota

Do you have a new CD coming up? Anything that you are currently working on?No...just getting started on this recent CD. But I am already working on songs for my next CD. Working on a new blues tune called "JOB".

I have never written a blues song and am not sure I have that rhythm in me-but gonna give it a try!

Where can people learn more about you? What's your website?http://www.dianekaymusic.com

Is there anything else that you would like to share with the fans?
I would like to thank them for all of the support and kind words of encouragement they all give me! My CD is titled after a very special song "Help Me Decide" that is a Pro-Life song about my own personal testimony of an unplanned pregnancy when I was 19, and the whole story of what happened. I encourage anyone listening out there to share this song with anyone who may need some words of encouragement for a similar situation they may be in! I am also available to sing at any Pro-Life events or conventions. Thank you for your time and God Bless!
